Biographical Information[edit]

Bill Schmidt was the scouting director for the Colorado Rockies from 2000-2011.

Schmidt was the head coach at Magnolia High School, then was an assistant coach at Santa Ana College in 1982-1984 and Arizona State University in 1985.

Schmidt was a scout for the Cincinnati Reds in 1982-1984. He coached the Billings Mustangs in 1984 and the Helena Gold Sox in 1986. He was a scout for the Major League Baseball Scouting Bureau in 1987-1988 and the New York Yankees from 1988-1995 while also coaching the Oneonta Yankees in 1991-1993. He moved to the Cleveland Indians as a national crosschecker from 1995-1999, before joining the Rockies.

In April of 2021 he became acting General Manager of the Rockies following the resignation of Jeff Bridich, and was confirmed in his position on October 2nd. It was a rough stretch for the team, as they had a losing record each of the next four seasons, including an awful 43-119 mark in 2025 when Schmidt had to fire long-time manager Bud Black early in the season when it became clear the team was headed for disaster. Things did not improve at all under interim manager Warren Schaeffer, and Schmidt handed in his own resignation when the season ended.
