Benny Walton was called up from AAA as a fill-in umpire for one American League game on April 22, 1996. It was a game between the New York Yankees and Kansas City Royals at Kauffman Stadium. He worked third base with a regular umpiring crew comprising John Hirschbeck, Jim Joyce and Ted Hendry. Jim McKean was normally the fourth member of that crew but he missed that particular game.
