Biographical Information[edit]

Lefthander Angel Zerpa was signed by the Kansas City Royals as an international amateur free agent out of Venezuela on July 26, 2016. He reached the majors with the Royals at the end of the 2021 season, but his start on September 30th was his only appearance of the season for them. Facing the Cleveland Indians, he gave up 2 unearned runs on 3 hits in 5 innings and was charged with a 6-1 loss.

In 2022, his three appearances for the Royals came in July, one game in relief and two starts. He earned his first major league win in the relief outing, a two-inning scoreless stint against the Detroit Tigers in the second game of a doubleheader on July 11th, which K.C. won by a 7-3 score. He also won as a starter facing the Toronto Blue Jays on July 14th, but took the loss in his final outing to finish at 2-1, 1.64. In 2023, the transition to the bullpen began in earnest as just 3 of his 15 games in the majors were as a starter and he went 3-3, 4.85 with 36 strikeouts in 42 2/3 innings.

By 2024, Angel was a lefthanded specialist coming out of the bullpen for a strong Royals team that ended a decade-long postseason drought. He pitched 53 2/3 innings in 60 appearances, with a record of 2-0 and an ERA of 3.86. He won two postseason games in relief: Game 2 of the Wild Card Series against the Baltimore Orioles on October 2nd, and Game 2 of the Division Series against the New York Yankees on October 7th. In five postseason outings overall, he allowed just 1 run on 2 hits in 4 innings of work. In 2025, he returned in a similar role, although he did make 2 starts among his 69 games on the mound. He finished at 5-2, 4.18, and set personal highs for innings (64 2/3) and strikeouts (58). On December 13th, he was traded to the Milwaukee Brewers in return for two major leaguers, OF Isaac Collins and P Nick Mears.
