Biographical Information[edit]
Alessandro Ciarla has pitched in Italy and the Dominican Republic and for the Italian national team.
He allowed 7 walks and 3 runs in 4 1/3 IP for Nettuno in the 2014 Italian Baseball League at age 16. He gave up 2 unearned runs in 2 2/3 IP in the 2014 European Cup. [1] He attended the MLB European Elite Camp that year, getting to work with Greg Swindell. [2] For Nettuno in 2015, he had a 0-1, 4.63 record. He was signed by Philadelphia Phillies scout Claudio Scerrato in May 2016. [3] That winter, he played for Team Europe in the Asia Baseball Winter League. [4]
Ciarla was 1-0 with a 5.40 ERA for the 2016 DSL Phillies 2 while he held right-handed batters to a .100 average. [5] He did not play in 2017 and the Philleis let him go. Signing with Città di Nettuno back in Italy, he had a 4.05 ERA in 2018, fanning 18 in 13 1/3 IP. He had a save and a 2.45 ERA for Godo in 2019. He did not resurface in Italy's top league until 2022, when he was 3-0 with 3 saves and a 3.83 ERA for Macerata, whiffing 58 but walking 36 in 40 IP. He gave up only 29 hits but uncorked 14 wild pitches. Returning to Nettuno in 2023, he posted a 3-5, 3.73 record, striking out 44 in 31 1/3 innings and being used regularly as a starter for the first time in years.
The right-hander dazzled in 2024 at 3-0, 0.97 with two saves, striking out 64 in 37 innings. He was 6th in ERA (between Giacomo Aschin and Enrico Zanchi) and 4th in opponent average (.148). [6] The next year, he was 1-2 with two saves and a 1.62 ERA. He then was with Italy for the 2025 European Championship. He got into one game for the runners-up, closing out a 16-0 rout of Lithuania. Replacing Mattia Sireus, he struck out Rokas Danielius, yielded a single to Vilius Paikovas and got Vilmatas Katinas on a grounder. Lukas Sirgėdas reached on catcher's interference then Ciarla whiffed Deividas Tamasevskis to end it. [7]
