Biographical Information[edit]

Albert Didace Riopel, known as Hop Riopel, was born on October 11, 1900, in Worcester[1] He attended Worcester Commerce High School and then College of the Holy Cross, graduating in 1924 after earning 11 varsity letters as a three-sport athlete[2] He later played in the outfield for the Lewiston Twins of the New England League in 1928 and 1929[3].

After graduating, Riopel turned down professional baseball offers and accepted a teaching and coaching position at Milford High[2] He returned to College of the Holy Cross in 1933 as freshman baseball, basketball, and football coach[2] and became the school's head baseball coach in 1961[4]. Over six seasons, he compiled an 82-43 record. His 1962 and 1963 clubs earned consecutive trips to the College World Series, and his teams made three NCAA Tournament appearances overall[5].

Riopel was inducted into the Holy Cross Varsity Club Hall of Fame in 1957[2] He died of a heart ailment on September 4, 1966, in Worcester[6].
