Biographical Information[edit]
Akihito Fukuo played in Nippon Pro Baseball for 13 years.
Fukuo hit .306 with two Best Nine awards in his college career, and he hit .474 to win the batting title in the 1975 fall season. He was drafted by the Yomiuri Giants in the 5th round of the 1985 NPB draft, and he went 0-for-12 in 1987. Fukuo was often used as a backup infielder or pinch-runner, and he never had more than 80 at-bats a season. He was 0-for-7 in the 1996 Nippon Series, and the Giants lost to the Orix BlueWave in 5 games. Fukuo then played a career-high 67 games in 1997, but his batting line was .176/.253/.309. He announced his retirement in 1999, and he was a minor league coach for the Giants from 2001 to 2007 and from 2013 to 2016. Fukuo also served as fielding coach for their top team in 2008, and he became an assistant coach for Meiji University in 2021.
Overall, Fukuo hit .201/.275/.295 with 120 hits and 9 homers in 13 seasons in NPB.
