2001 Central American Games
Nicaragua returned to their traditional dominant role, going 6-0. It helped that defending champion Panama did not attend due to financial issues. Cairo Murillo was named tournament MVP, pitching a shutout against Guatemala in the finale. Ramón Padilla ended his long run with the national team, after 15 years. He homered twice off Enrique Lemus in the finale. On the other hand, Ofilio Castro was beginning his own lengthy stint with the national team. Adolfo Matamoros hit a tourney-best .625.
