Biographical Information[edit]

Infielder Ángel Martínez is the son of former major league catcher Sandy Martinez. His brother, Sandy Martinez Jr., played in the minor leagues from 2017-2019.

He was signed by the Cleveland Indians as an international amateur free agent on July 2, 2018 and made his professional debut the next year with the DSL Indians. By the time he reached the majors in 2024, the Cleveland team had been renamed the "Guardians". In his debut on June 23rd, he started at designated hitter against the Toronto Blue Jays, going 0 for 3 with a strikeout in a 6-3 win. He started at third base the next day and got his first base hit, a single off Yusei Kikuchi, in his first at-bat in the 2nd inning. He hit .232 in 43 games that first season with 3 homers and 11 RBIs for an OPS+ of 81. While his debut had come as an infielder, he was principally an outfielder, with 21 games in center, 14 in left and 9 in right.

In 2025, he was Cleveland's regular center fielder, playing 114 games there in 139 appearances. It was his defensive play that kept him in the line-up, as he batted just .224 with 11 homers and 45 RBIs for an OPS+ of 73. Control of the strike zone was an issue, as he drew just 23 walks while striking out 110 times. He had made his postseason debut in 2024, going 0 for 1 in the Division Series against the Detroit Tigers, and he played only marginally more in 2025, going 1 for 3 with a run in his only game, also against Detroit, this time in the Wild card Series.

He started 2026 hitting much better than in his first two seasons. On April 24th, he had the first multi-homer game of his career, going deep twice against Max Scherzer in an 8-6 win over Toronto.
