Biographical Information[edit]

Andoni Rodríguez played for the Spanish national team a few times. Backing up Francisco Aristu at catcher in the 1995 Intercontinental Cup, he had one plate appearance, grounding into a double play while facing Brazil's Fabio Takara. [1] During the 1997 European Championship, he scored 7 runs for the Bronze Medalists, one behind team leader Juan Garcia. [2] As Spain's main DH in the 1997 Intercontinental Cup, he was 1-for-11 with a walk and a homer; Nestor Rodriguez was also on the team and had the same birthdate - presumably they are twins. His dinger off Akio Shimizu was one of Spain's last two homers in an Intercontinental Cup; Garcia also went deep off Shimizu that game. [3] His swan song for the national team came in the 1998 Baseball World Cup, when he was still only 21 years old. He was 1-for-15 and fielded .968 as their main catcher. His hit was off China's Zhanpeng Wang. [4]
