Fewest Hits By Yankees In Post-Season Elimination Game

Posted by Steve Lombardi on October 22, 2010

Tonight, in Game 6 of the 2010 ALCS, the Yankees could only manage three hits. This was the lowest amount of hits, ever, for a Yankees team in the last game of a post-season series (in their team history). Below are the post-season "elimination games" - prior to today - where New York had five hits or less:

Harvey Araton wrote yesterday in the Times "First, the Yankees have to win Friday against the immortal Colby Lewis. Far from a sure thing, given the outcome of Game 2, but not exactly the scaling of Everest, either."

He's immortal now. Cool as a cucumber. That Colby Lewis manned it up tonight, what a performance.

PS -- what is Colby Lewis' game score? One of the Best LCS Game 6 Starting Pitcher Performances?
The only run was on the blown all on Swisher's HPB

I love it when a journeyman pitcher comes up big.

I also love thinking about that 2004 ALCS game 7. The Yankees might've had fewer hits in that game if Pedro hadn't pitched an inning (Lowe and Timlin only gave up 1 each)

According to John Autin (who does a great job posting), in another thread said:

Colby Lewis is done after 8 IP, he has tied David Cone for the #3 spot on the list above, with a Game Score of 76. (8 IP, 3 hits, 1 run, 3 walks, 7 Ks.)

struck out the side in the 8th to finish

Gooddisussion on IBBs at Joe's Blog in whih he posits, and proves, that IBBs don't work. Girardi died by the IBB this series -- it really bit him back. Poor management, anyone agree?

The neat thing is, for the 1922-23 Series, it was the same guy: Art Nehf. Sent 'em home in consecutive years.

  8. Tim Says:

Actually, Art Nehf lost in '23, but pitched a good game none the less.

    @4
Thanks, Mike. I believe that's the first time I've been quoted or praised online. I am flattered.

By the way, the record for fewest hits in any postseason elimination game is 1, done 4 times, most notably in game 6 of the 1995 WS, a 1-0 win for Tom Glavine (8 IP). David Justice homered off reliever Jim Poole for the game's only run.

The first 1-hit elimination output was by the Oakland A's in the 1974 ALCS -- the only team to win such a game, by 2-1 over Baltimore. Reggie Jackson had Oakland's only hit (an RBI double in the 7th) and 3 of their 11 walks, which was then a record for a postseason game (equaled that very same day by the Dodgers in their 12-1 win over Pittsburgh in the NLCS). Nine of Oakland's 11 walks were issued by Mike Cuellar, who fell 1 shy of the record set by Bill Bevens in his famous WS near-no-hitter.

    @ 7-8
Art Nehf started 9 WS games and never allowed more than 6 hits in a regulation game. (He allowed 10 hits in a 12-inning win over Walter Johnson in the '24 Series, and also scored the go-ahead run in the 12th.) His career WS rate of 5.7 hits per 9 IP is one of the best ever by a starting pitcher. He threw 2 WS shutouts against the Yankees, both 1-0 games.
