White Sox hit for the team cycle….and win!

Posted by Andy on June 27, 2010

(Two notes: thanks to reader Blair K. for pointing out the White Sox's feat to me, and this is the 2,000th post on this blog!)

Yesterday, the White Sox hit for an exact team cycle: Alex Rios singled, Alexei Ramirez doubled, Gordon Beckham tripled, Paul Konerko homered, and the team got no other hits. In other words, they got exactly 4 hits as a team, one of each type. This is a pretty rare feat, including the fact that they won the game. Click through for more.

Here are the last 25 times before yesterday that a team has hit for an "exact cycle" like the White Sox:

As you can see, the last time a team did this and won was the Athletics in a 2001 squeaker against the Tigers. Before that, however, teams did have a 5-game winning streak with such performances. With the PI box score years, one team--the 1960 Cubs--scored 7 runs in a game with an "exact cycle".

As you might imagine, regular cycles (where a team hits at least each of those 4 hits but could have other hits as well) are much more common for team. Whereas there have been 74 "exact cycles" in the PI box score years of 1920-1939 and 1952-present, there have been 193 games in 2010 alone where a team hit for a regular cycle.

  1. Mr. Odd Says:

I wonder if any of these games had just one player with all the hits?

There's a handful of teams who did a double-cycle: 8 hits, 2 of each type, last time in 1970.

  2. XZPUMAZX Says:

All of those games also contain at least one BB, which begs the question has a team ever hit for an exact cycle and collected only 10 total bases? (Meaning no BB, IB, or men reaching on an error)

Today the Mets hit for the cycle in one inning (including two homers). These weren't their only hits, but I wonder how rare a feat this is. I would imagine it has been done before, but it was still nice to see.

And finaly, has a single player ever completed a double cycle in one game or a cycle in back to back games? I would image no. And that is one reason to keep watching abseball games - you can always see something that has never happened befor.

There is no game where one player hit for a cycle and had all his team's hits - in some post here a few days ago, I listed all the times one player had four hits and those were all his team's hits (no player had more than 4 hits in this situation), and in none of those instances (there were only three) did the player hit for a cycle.

I'm sure no single player has had a double cycle in one game - you don't get a lot of players with 8 hits of any description in a single game. I'm pretty sure no player has ever cycled in back to back games, but there are lists of cycles available on the web, so you can check this yourself.

What's amazing is how many of them also stole a base as well!

  5. Bradley Says:

I forgot to mention also about how many of them also had a HBP!

  6. Joe Says:

Xzpumazx, only base hits count towards total bases. Walks, errors, etc. do not count towards that total. Probably just a semantics thing (I get what you meant), but anyway, thought I'd clarify.
