Five Hit Games

Posted by Raphy on February 22, 2009

Here are the players (1956--2008) with at least 5 games in their career of at least 5 hits. The list surprised me a bit.

                   Games Link to Individual Games
+-----------------+-----+-------------------------+
 Pete Rose 10 Ind. Games
 Tony Gwynn 9 Ind. Games
 Dave Winfield 7 Ind. Games
 Ichiro Suzuki 7 Ind. Games
 Paul Molitor 7 Ind. Games
 Johnny Damon 7 Ind. Games
 Roberto Clemente 7 Ind. Games
 Rod Carew 7 Ind. Games
 Kirby Puckett 6 Ind. Games
 Lou Brock 6 Ind. Games
 Luis Aparicio 6 Ind. Games
 Maury Wills 5 Ind. Games
 Bernie Williams 5 Ind. Games
 Alfonso Soriano 5 Ind. Games
 Rafael Palmeiro 5 Ind. Games
 Jorge Orta 5 Ind. Games
 Willie Mays 5 Ind. Games
 Kenny Lofton 5 Ind. Games
 Curt Flood 5 Ind. Games
 Andre Dawson 5 Ind. Games
 Orlando Cepeda 5 Ind. Games
 George Brett 5 Ind. Games

In addition to some great and really good players we also have some good players who didn't walk much.

As difficult as 5 in a career seem, Ichiro and Gwynn both pulled off 4 in a season and Dave Winfield had 3 in June of  '84. (Don Mattingly also had 2 such games that month giving the Yankees 5 in one month. They went 2-3 in those games)

On the opposite end of the spectrum, of the 47 players who have 2500 or more hits since 1956, only Barry Bonds and Louis Gonzalez have never had a 5 hit game.

I'd love to scorecard a game where a guy gets five hits. Once I got to do a four-hit game by Reed Johnson.

I don't remember every game i've gone to. However I was a season ticket holder to Saturday Yankee games from 98 through last season. I've also attended many games at Tropicana Field the last 2 seasons. So there's a chance i've seen 4. John Mabry (Seattle) and Chili Davis (Yankees) both in 1999 and Tomas Perez (Rays) in 2006 would fit this in Yankee Stadium. Johnny Peralta (Indians) in 2008 in Tampa as well. Back in my younger days i did do a scorecard so it's possible i did both Mabry's and Davis's.

Spudart, I really liked "Wind blows in" and fat Griffey.

I was at and scorecarded a 3-HR game. It was July 17, 1990 at Yankee Stadium. Bo Jackson hit 3 dingers in three at-bats in the first 5-innings of the game!! The Yankees were already 20 games under .500 and the stadium was half empty, and it only cost $50 to get scalped seats right behind home plate, and the small crowd was electrified. Bo had two or three more plate appearances to try for number 4.

Well, in the bottom of the 6th, Neon Deion Sanders, batting .150, hit a lame drive into the right-center gap. Bo Jackson (playing center) dove for it - and didn't get up. And Sanders ran faster than any human being I've ever seen. He was half-way to third when anyone else would have been half-way to second. Sanders had an inside the parker, and Jackson was out of commission for over a month.

And by the way, Jackson hit a homer in his first at bat on August 26, giving him 4 home runs in 4 consecutive at bats.

    I'll never forget it.
