Since 1919, 15+ Hits In 9-Inning Game, All Singles

Posted by Steve Lombardi on April 23, 2011

Just for the fun of it, I ran a PI query this morning asking for: From 1919 to 2011, only 9-inning games, where XBH=0*H, sorted by greatest H

Here's the result of that one:

That Dodger game in 1988 is a beauty. 8 innings. 22 hits. All singles.

  1. Larry Hartzell Says:

    Love the '36 Brooklyn-Boston game on line 7. Dodgers had 18 singles and no strikeouts -- and yet didn't hit into a single double play?? Remarkable. . . .

  2. sfduke76 Says:

    @1 - Even more amazing about that game to me: 14 runs/31 hits. Time of game 1:59!

  3. John Autin Says:

    Out of curiosity, I ran some W% comparisons:

    Years 1919-2011, 9-inning games, 15+ hits and:

    -- no extra-base hits (i.e., the games listed above): 66 wins, 20 losses, .767 W%, equivalent to 124-38 over a full season.

    -- exactly one extra-base hit: 383 wins, 113 losses, .772 W%, equivalent to 125-37.

    -- one or two extra-base hits: 1,434 wins, 367 losses, .796 W%, equivalent to 129-33.

    -- one or more extra-base hits: 15,819 wins, 2,027 losses, .886 W%, equivalent to 144-18.

    -- one HR as the only extra-base hit: 77 wins, 22 losses, .778 W%, equivalent to 126-36.

    -- one triple as the only extra-base hit: 4,718 wins, 504 losses, .903 W%, equivalent to 146-16.

    I've no clue why the "lone triple" seems so dominant -- perhaps just because the "lone HR" is such a small sample.

    But these numbers suggest that, even at such a high level of hits, power still makes a difference.

    (OK, shoot me down....)

    JA, If you have 496 games with exactly one XBH, you cannot have 5,222 games with one triple as the only XBH and have both groups meeting all your other criteria. The triple group has to be a subset of the one XBH group, so cannot be larger. Maybe you did not keep the number of singles the same among the groups?

    The 1924-05-04 game between Cleveland and Chicago featured 17 singles, but were also issued 9 walks.

    The Dodger-Red game at #1 is also the only game that Dave Concepción appeared as a pitcher; he gave up 2 of those singles.

    The first game that jumped out at me is #8; 1923 As vs Red Sox. The As had 18 hits but only managed 5 runs and lost. Jack Quinn pitched a complete game 18-hitter and got the win. I'd love to have the play by play because I can't figure out everything that happened from just the box score.

    Various oddities:
    With 18 hits and a walk, the As had 19 baserunners, scored 5, had 0 GIDP (do GIDP figures go back this far?), yet only had 9 LOB
    The As scored 5 R with 4 RBI and no errors, so it looks like the 5th run was balked home
    Pitcher Al Kellett scored a run without a hit, walk, SH or anything else. Pinch runner perhaps?

    On second look, the box score lists the As grounding into 2 DPs, but your chart lists 0. Any idea what happened there?

    Kds, thanks -- I messed up the triple search.
    The correct numbers for 15+ hits and 1 triple as the only extra-base hit:
    -- 60 wins, 22 losses, .732 W%, equivalent to 119-43 in a full season.

    And that gets rid of my puzzlement over one-triple seeming better than one-HR.

    I should have been suspicious of the huge difference in numbers for the two groups. The moral: Never post before my 2nd cup of coffee.

    @8

    Al Kellett could have reached base on a force-out.
    The A's had 41 PA. Subtracting from that 27 outs and 5 RS leaves 9 LOB. On some of the hits the batter could have been out trying to stretch his hit or a base-runner may have been thrown out trying to advance.

    @9

    I should have referenced post #7. Sorry John and Djibouti.
