Every starter has 2 or more hits

Posted by Andy on July 5, 2011

The first 8 starting in the Yankees' lineup today each have at least 2 hits. Only Francisco Cervelli, the 9th-place batter, has no hits.

Here are all the games in the searchable box score era where all 9 starters had at least 2 hits:

    14 times since the dh began, only twice by NL rules. None in the 50's or 60's. The Cubs had it done to them twice in 1934.

    The 2007 Texas-Baltimore game sticks out, of course - looking at the boxscore, I noticed that the bottom three hitters - David Murphy, Saltalamacchia, and Ramon Vazquez - drove in 16 of the 30 runs, hit 13 of the hits, and scored 14 of the runs. They also hit 4 of the 6 homers. I wonder how often it is in such high-scoring games, say 15 runs or more, that the bottom third drives in more than half of the runs.

    So, unless I overlooked one, there's never been a game (in the searchable box score era) where one team had no zeros in the box score (every player with at least one hit, run, and RBI).

    I'm wrong. Please ignore #3.

    Has there been a game where one team had no zeros in the box score (every player with at least one hit, run, and RBI)?

    @4
    I did a random search and found one game where every starting player had at least one hit, run and RBI. It was Cleveland vs. the St. Louis Browns on 8/12/48. There are probably many more.

  6. statboy Says:

    @5, Thanks, but Cleveland has some zeros in there. I meant every player in the team's box score, not just the starting nine players.

    @5.

    In game number 1 on this list (Dodgers/Twins from last week),in addition to 2+ hits, every starter also had 1+ runs and 1+ RBIs. There are only 3 other such games since 1919.

    5/13/09...

    The final game for reliever Glendon Rusch, as a Rockie.
    Good guy, great name...great story too. 342 games in the bigs.

    @6.

    Games 15, 17 and 23 in this list have only a single zero in the box score.

    In every case, the zero was in the RBI column. In none of the games did the pitcher have that lone zero.

    In game 23, Tigers pitcher Elam Vangilder went 3 for 6 with a homer and 3 RBI in his complete game victory, allowing 10 runs on 18 hits for a 13 game score. There are actually 3 complete game victories with a lower game score - Ernie Wingard of the Browns takes the prize with a 6 game score for this gem.
