MLB has just announced the retirement of Manny Ramirez, effective immediately.
Reading between the lines, it would seem that perhaps Manny had another positive test for a banned substance, which I believe would result in a 1-year suspension as a repeat offender.
I think there's no doubt that he has Hall of Fame numbers--but does this affect his chances of getting elected?

The 2011 Mariners have had just 14 pitching appearances through the first 5 games of the season. That includes starts plus total relief appearances. By comparison, the Marlins and Nationals lead the way in 2011 with 25 total appearances in their first 5 games.
The Mariners are actually tied for fewest pitching appearances in the first 5 games among all teams since 2000:
Let's check the full-season records of those other teams.
The 2001 Red Sox were 82-79 led by Hideo Nomo at 13-10. The 2000 Red Sox were 85-77 led by Pedro Martinez at 18-6. The 2009 Royals were 65-97 led by Zack Greinke at 16-8. The 2000 Royals were 77-85 led by, umm, I guess Jeff Suppan at 10-9.
Overall, that's a 309-338 record, a .478 winning percentage.
So, this stat doesn't seem to indicate a great team.

Since 1919, through April 6, 2010, how many pitchers have appeared in more than one game where they pitched at least one inning allowing no hits or walks in the contest – but, had at least one run to score against him?

Just a quick Play Index note: Sean recently added a "team's first ___ games" option at the bottom of the Team Game Finders and a "to start season" option for the Streak Finders.
This will allow you to find things like how many other seasons the Reds scored 7 or more runs four times in their first 5 games, or that Baltimore's season-opening 4-game streak of allowing exactly 1 run was the longest since 1919.

Yesterday, the Rays lost again, dropping to 0-5. They got only 4 hits in the game. Even before that (because I wrote this post last night...) they had some terrible hitting going on.
Check out the teams with the most players having at least 10 at-bats and a batting average under .100:
That's 4 out of 17 players from the Rays. And after today, John Jason joined the group with another 0fer, Man-Ram fell to .059, Damon fell to .067, Dan Johnson fell to .053, and Matt Joyce fell to .071.
As of the moment, the Rays have the worst BA in the majors at .138.

Houston, Boston and Tampa Bay all sport disappointing 0-5 records . Five games isn't a lot over the course of a long season, but it is rare for really good teams to start that poorly. In fact only 2 teams in history have overcome an 0-5 start to win their divisions.

Six teams that have started 0-5 have gone on to win more than 55.6% (the equivalent of 90 out of 162) of their games.
