17 is not enough

Posted by Andy on August 13, 2008

Last night, the Rangers became the second team this year to score 17 runs in a game and lose. Oops.

Most runs scored in a loss since 1956:

Wade Boggs taking the first pitch

Posted by Andy on August 12, 2008

Reader thebest suggested I take a look at Wade Boggs and how well he did despite (or due to) often taking the first pitch.

Unfortunately, we have pitch-by-pitch data for plate appearances only from 1988 onward, and even then it's not totally complete. We miss the first bunch of years of Boggs' career. But let's see what we can learn from what data we have available. All of this information comes from Boggs' career splits for pitch data.

Firstly, just how often did Boggs really let the first pitch go by?

We can see that he had 367 plate appearances that ended on the first pitch. He had a .360 BA in those PAs, damn good even for Wade Boggs. He had 3418 PAs that ended sometime after the count went to 1-0. Clearly he took the first pitch in those cases. He had another 2905 PAs that ended sometime after the count went to 0-1. We don't know what fraction of these were taken strikes vs swings that resulted in foul balls. Lets examine the two extreme cases:

Imagine that in the 2905 PAs that had a count of 0-1, Boggs took a called strike every single time. That would mean that he took the first pitch a total of 3418 + 2905 = 6323 times, as compared to 367 times that he swung, meaning he swung only 5.5% of the time, which does indeed seem quite low. Imagine, instead, that in those 2905 PAs, he swung and hit a foul ball every time. That means he took the first pitch 3418 times, meaning he swung at the first pitch only 49.0% of the time.

I wish we knew how often he swung, but we just don't have the data available.

If Boggs truly did take the first pitch very often, then pitchers should really have made sure to throw him a strike. However, even if all those 2905 PAs with an 0-1 count were called strikes, they still threw him a strike less often than they threw a ball (as evidenced by the 3418 PAs with a 1-0 count.)

For comparison purposes, let's look at a couple of other players. First, the best comparison for Boggs is Tony Gwynn, in terms of type of hitter and era of career.

Gwynn (again, after 1988) swung at the first pitch in 1009 PAs. He had 3216 more that went to 1-0 and 2571 more that went to 0-1. The ratio of 1-0 to 0-1 PAs is very similar to that for Boggs, but Gwynn clearly swung at the first pitch a lot more. Using the same two types of extreme cases as above, Gwynn swung at the first offering between 14.8% and 52.7% of the time. When I say that Gwynn swung at the first pitch more often, I'm assuming that the two players had a similar ratio of called strikes vs foul balls on the 0-1 counts--and that may not be a valid assumption.

Let's check one more guy: Don Mattingly, who also had a reputation of taking the first pitch. After 1988, Mattingly had 465 PAs that ended on the first pitch. He had 2335 that went 1-0 and 1798 that went 0-1. That's a range of swinging at the first pitch of 10.1% to 49.2%.

All of these quick results ignores stuff like HBP, which obviously affects the total number of times a player swung or didn't swing.

Jason Varitek – finished?

Posted by Andy on August 7, 2008

Jason Varitek has hit poorly all year. At least he's been consistent.

Right now, he's got a .220 BA, .310 OBP, and .355 SLG, and an OPS+ of 74.

He's got 304 AB right now and projects out to about 430 for the year, assuming his playing time stays about the same. That's a reasonably safe bet, considering what a poor player Kevin Cash is.

Here are all the seasons by a catcher at age 36 or older where he got at least 400 AB, ranked by worst OPS+

We see that Carlton Fisk and Benito Santiago both posted a stinker season but later bounced back to get at least 400 AB in a subsequent season and post an OPS+ over 100. But nobody else has done that, and with the exception of Bob Boone, everybody else disappeared from the full-time catching ranks after posting such a terrible season. Many of these guys played another season or two, but with reduced playing time or changing positions.

The big question is: what happens to Varitek after this season? If I remember correctly, he's playing in the last year of his contract right now, and he's represented by Scott Boras. He's also team captain. On the one hand, I can't imagine Boston letting him go. On the other hand, he's become one of the worst regular players in the league. The Red Sox already jettisoned one bad catcher in Doug Mirabelli...is it time for them to repeat that act?

That's 4 Rays in the top 19. Geez.

But of course, Royce Ring, he of the 8.46 ERA, also makes this list. Hmm.

Odds & Ends

Posted by Raphy on August 5, 2008

I was playing around with PI and came across a couple of things that I wouldn't have thought actually happened. They're not related to this season, but interesting none-the-less.

1. Pitching 1 inning and recording all 3 outs via pickoff. Tippy Martinez in 1983.

2. 2 Batters faced, both intentionally walked. Ron Bryant in 1973 and Moe Drabowsky in 1961.

I was also suprised  to learn that there have been over 30,015 217 appearances by a pitcher (since 1956) in which the pitcher has intentionally walked the only batter he faced. 4 of those pitchers (including 1 in 2006 and 1 in 2007) received the loss in their game.

Whiffing Marlins

Posted by Raphy on August 5, 2008

Whiz posted this on the suggestions page and it seemed worthy of its own thread (I took the liberty to add links to the searches):

I was doing some searches on longest team batting streaks and found that Florida currently has has at least 8 SO in each of the last 13 games, the longest such streak in the PI database (i.e., since 1956).

They also currently have streaks of 15 games with 7 or more SO (longest is 17 by the 1996 Tigers) and 4 games with 10 or more SO (longest is 6 by the 1972 and 2004 Reds and 1997 Giants). It’s not surprising since the Marlins strike out 8.7 times per game, by far the most in the majors, and they are on pace to beat the Brewers total of 1399 in a season.

The streak for 6 or more SO is safe for now — the longest is by the Rays last year, an amazing 47 games (2nd longest is only 28, “achieved” by Florida earlier this year).

Another oddity: the weekend series between Florida and Colorado is (as far as I can tell) the only three-game series since 1956 in which both teams had at least 10 SO each in all three games.

’68-’69 Mets Modern Day Kings Of Winning The Close Ones On The Road

Posted by Steve Lombardi on August 2, 2008

Watching the Angels win last night, 1-0, at Yankee Stadium, got me wondering as to which team has won the most 1-0 road games in a season.    To find the answer, in terms of "Since 1956," I set Baseball-Reference.com's Play Index Team Batting Game Finder to "Team Won, On the Road, (requiring R=1), sorted by greatest number of games matching selected criteria in a game" and this is what I found:

Tm Year Games Link to Individual Games
+---+----+-----+-------------------------+
 NYM 1968 5 Ind. Games
 LAD 1984 5 Ind. Games
 CIN 1963 5 Ind. Games

 STL 1968 4 Ind. Games
 STL 1996 4 Ind. Games

 MIL 1971 4 Ind. Games
 CLE 1989 4 Ind. Games
 ATL 1993 4 Ind. Games

It's an interesting list.  Note the Mets teams of 1968 and 1969 here.  Thanks to Baseball-Reference.com's Play Index Team Batting Game Finder, we can also look at those nine wins for those Metsies.  Just set the controls for "From 1968 to 1969, Playing for NYM, Team Won, On the Road, (requiring R=1), sorted by most recent date in a game" and here are the results:

You expected to see Tom Seaver and Jerry Koosman winning some of these games for those Mets.  But, Jim McAndrew won two of them in 1968 as well.

For some reason (probably the team name change) the "Ind. Games" links for the Rays are broken. But here's a bit more info on the CG SHOs:

So they got 2 from Sabathia (who of course no longer plays for them) and 1 each from Carmona and Lee.

And for Tampa Bay:

Two from Shields, one from Sonnanstine, and Garza's the other day. They haven't gotten one yet from arguably their best pitcher, Scott Kazmir.

I know that the Rays stumbled badly around the All-Star break, and almost certainly Boston will win the division, but they have a very solid pitching staff. They are going to be playoff contenders for the next 5 years.
