Allow 1 hit, lose the game

Posted by Andy on September 29, 2009

Following the jump is the list of 38 games since 1954 where a pitching staff has allowed at most 1 hit in a game and still lost. The most recent occasion was last year when the Angels allowed zero hits to the Dodgers and still lost, thanks to a runner that reached on error, advanced on error, and scored on a sacrifice fly.

This list includes 5 games with zero hits allowed. Most of these are pretty famous "near no-hitters" as games where the losing team allowed no hits but pitched only 8 innings. However, included is Ken Johnson's 1964 no-hitter (and loss) with the Colt .45's and the bizarre 1967 Orioles-Tigers game that resulted in a combined no-hitter (and loss) for the Orioles.

Keystones That Reach

Posted by Steve Lombardi on September 28, 2009

Some fun via Baseball-Reference.com's Play Index Batting Season finder...

This season, Robinson Cano and Derek Jeter have become the first keystone combo (teammates) in baseball history to have 200+ hits in the same season

Ah, but, how many keystone combos have reached base 275+ times, each, in the same season?  Here's that answer:

Year Lg Team Number Players Matching
+----+--+---------------------------------+------+-----------------------------------------+
1999 AL New York Yankees 2 Derek Jeter / Chuck Knoblauch
1949 NL Brooklyn Dodgers 2 Jackie Robinson / Pee Wee Reese

Yup, that's it - just two.

Pretty nice company...just twice in history...once in each league...both times in New York...each team being a pennant winner.

Feature Watch: Player Batting Gamelogs

Posted by Neil Paine on September 28, 2009

Today we're going to talk a little about the individual batting gamelogs, which are by no means new here at Baseball Reference, but at the same time are tools that I think we can continually stand to learn new things about. To access a batter's gamelogs, go to his main page, point to "Game Logs [+]" under the "Standard Batting" table, and select the logs you want to look at.

Homer plus 3 stolen bases

The other day, Alex Rodriguez hit a homer and stole 3 bases in the same game, becoming the 3rd player to achieve the feat this season.

Finally, since 1954, nobody has ever hit more than 1 HR with at least 3 stolen bases. That's not too surprising...tough to steal bases when you're hitting round-trippers!

A-Rod, The Chicken, The Egg & The Fence

Posted by Steve Lombardi on September 26, 2009

For me, when a batter reaches base in a game three or more times, and he also scores two or more runs and drives in two or more runs in the contest, he's had a big day at the plate. Alex Rodriguez had such a "big day" in yesterday's Yankees game.

Just for the heck of it, I decided to use Baseball-Reference.com's Play Index Batting Game Finder to see how many times "A-Rod" has post a game like last night this season - and break it down by games the Yankees have won and lost.

First, here's when Alex has posted such an effort in Yankees wins this year:

Alex Rodriguez: For 2009, Team Won, (requiring TOB>=3, R>=2 and RBI>=2), sorted by most recent date in a game

Cnt Date Tm Opp GmReslt PA AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI BB TOB IBB SO HBP SH SF ROE GDP SB CS BOr Positions

Games found: 4.

And, next, here are A-Rod's big days with the bat in games that the Yankees have lost this season:

Alex Rodriguez: For 2009, Team Lost, (requiring TOB>=3, R>=2 and RBI>=2), sorted by most recent date in a game

Cnt Date Tm Opp GmReslt PA AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI BB TOB IBB SO HBP SH SF ROE GDP SB CS BOr Positions
+----+-------------+---+----+-------+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+---+--+---+---+--+---+--+--+---+---+--+--+---+---------+
    1 2009-07-11 NYY @LAA L 8-14 4 3 3 2 0 0 2 3 1 3 0 1 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 4th 3B
    2 2009-07-10 NYY @LAA L 6-10 5 5 2 3 1 0 1 2 0 3 0 2 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 4th 3B

Games found: 2.

O.K., so, we're talking about 6 games here...not a huge sample size. So, what if we expand this from "just 2009 to date" to "Since 2004 to 2009 to date"?

This tells us that there have been 54 games since 2004 where Alex Rodriguez has had a "big day" with the bat for the Yankees were the team won.  And, there have been just 10 games since 2004 where Alex Rodriguez had a "big day" and the Yankees lost.

Therefore, since A-Rod's been a Yankee, when he has a big day at the plate, the Yankees have won 84% of the time.

Of course, there are many other factors that come into play here - like what the rest of the Yankees team does in these games, especially their pitchers.  But, at the least, if someone want to say that A-Rod only has big days in games that the Yankees lose, well, we know that's not true...based on these stats.

Now, the next question may be the one around "stat padding" - meaning does Alex Rodriguez only have big days with the bat in games where the Yankees are having a "laugher"? Well, if you look at those 54 games where the Yanks won and A-Rod had a big day, and rank them by the amount of runs the Yankees won by that day, you'd get this list:

Now, this is interesting. In 63% of these games where the Yankees won and Alex Rodriguez had a big day with the stick, the Yankees won the game by 6 runs or more. And, in 43% of these games where the Yankees won and Alex Rodriguez had a big day with the stick, the Yankees won the game by 8 runs or more.

But, this is a chicken and the egg sort of thing - did the Yankees win by a lot of runs in these games because A-Rod was throwing around the lumber, or, did A-Rod "pad" his stats in a game where the Yankees were running away? I suppose the answer depends on which side of the "Alex Rodriguez fan" fence that you choose to sit on...

They went missing when we redesigned the site, but I just got them updated and back on the. If you look at the gamelog drop down on the player pages, there is now a postseason option (where relevant) along with the years and if you look at the postseason sections on the player pages you will see links to Postseason Gamelogs. Enjoy.

Bloops: Name the Yankees’ Captains

For all of you Yankee fans out there, here's a Sporcle quiz that should be right up your alley: Can you name every team captain in New York Yankees history?

B.C. – Before (Aroldis) Chapman

Posted by Steve Lombardi on September 24, 2009

There's been a lot of talk lately about Cuban pitching prospect and free-agent-to-be Aroldis Chapman. So, I decided to ask Baseball-Reference.com's Play Index Pitching Game Finder to show me the big careers, since 1983, of pitchers who were born in Cuba. (I picked 1983 to make the list "After Luis Tiant.") Here's the results:

Yeah, I see Jose Canseco sneaking in there at the end. But, I also see a lot of pitchers with so-so major league careers. Just some food for thought for those big league teams bidding on Chapman...what works in Cuba sometimes doesn't do as well in a MLB park near you...

I can't think of a season when so many playoff teams were considering leaving prominent pitchers off the post-season rosters. Lidge may not be there, as well as Joba Chamberlain for the Yankees and Tim Wakefield for the Red Sox.

How’d They Do That?

Posted by Steve Lombardi on September 23, 2009

One of the fun things to do with Baseball-Reference.com's Play Index is to just look for crazy things and see how many games or seasons or careers fit that bill.  Today, I wondered:  Has a team ever allowed 15 walks or more, in a game of 9 innings or less, and won?  Well, thanks to B-R.com PI's Team Pitching Game Finder, we can see the answer:

From 1954 to 2009, Only 9-inning games, Team Won, (requiring BB>=15), sorted by greatest BB in a game
