BBWAA

10th December 2009

It has been floating around the blogosphere and twitter, but I got the official word last night. I've been invited to join the Baseball Writers Association of America. I am honored by the invitation and look forward to being part of a group whose primary goal is to distribute baseball information and and a group which I hold in high esteem.

Some people are confused about me being a member since I am decidedly not a baseball writer. The BBWAA has a membership category for Statisticians. From their bylaws and qualifications for membership:

Statisticians who supply baseball records to daily newspapers, baseball public relations personnel and other specialists who may be deemed eligible by the Board of Directors of the National Association.

Thank you to all of those who offered congratulations and best wishes. See you at the ballpark!

Appearance :: Its Your Call with Lynn Doyle (youtube)

28th August 2009

YouTube - Steroids in Sports :: Part 1 :: Its Your Call with Lynn Doyle

I taped a tv appearance on It's Your Call with Lynn Doyle a show that appears on the Comcast Network. The appearance was back in May or April, but it appears it is going to air this weekend or maybe last weekend. Unclear. I linked part I above. Here are Part II and Part III. Other than nodding my head like a broken bobblehead, I thought it went ok. I did come off a little glib at the end and that wasn't my intention. My main point is that baseball would be better without steroids, but I don't agree with the hysteria and scarlet letters handed out around their use.

Missed Games in Batting Gamelogs

10th July 2009

Manny Ramirez 2009 Batting Gamelogs - Baseball-Reference.com

For now this is just for 2009. I've added a note to the Gtm column (Team Game number), that shows cases where the batter missed a series of team games. This is a little funky for pitchers, but for batters it shows the number of games missed between the game in that row and the previous game. I don't show this at the end of the year or when a player switches teams because that is too hard to calculate and this took about 15 minutes to implement. Hmm, why did Manny have that 50 game gap?

A writer for the NY Daily News (which will have a profile of B-R this Sunday) gave me the idea.

Baseball’s most exciting play — The Hardball Times

2nd June 2009

Baseball’s most exciting play -- The Hardball Times

Nice article using our home run encyclopedia.

When setting up the HR Encyclopedia, I was using pbp data for 1954 on and HR log data pre-1954 (essentially). Unfortunately, I didn't realize that the pbp data was missing a good number of inside-the-park notations, but the HR log had them. This didn't affect everyone, but did affect some players.

So I've had to go back and get those noted appropriately. Dan Wilson was one such player affected and he now has the correct 2 IPHR's for his career. Everybody should be up to snuff tomorrow when the site regenerates. Active guys may still have an incorrect number.

Sorry, Chris.
