Once the Magic Number is 0, the team has clinched.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-is-a-magic-number-used\">How is a Magic Number used?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In the back half of the regular season, teams are competing for playoff spots, either by winning their division or clinching a wild card slot. The Magic Number allows teams to visualize how close they are to clinching.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Magic Number typically becomes a discussion topic in early September, when the Postseason is close and the Magic Number is small enough to be achievable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-to-calculate-magic-number\">How to calculate Magic Number?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Magic Number is calculated by adding the total number of games remaining in the season, adding one, and then subtracting from this the number of the leading team&#8217;s wins and the pursuant team&#8217;s losses<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a formula, that looks like:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>MN = (G + 1) &#8211; (WA + LB)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>G&nbsp;: number of games during the season<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>WA&nbsp;: number of wins by the leading team<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>LB&nbsp;: number of losses by the pursuing team<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-magic-number-calculator\">Magic Number Calculator<\/h2>\n\n\n<style>@media (max-width:480px){#cff-iframe-1{min-height:779px;}}@media (max-width:768px){#cff-iframe-1{min-height:397px;}}@media (max-width:1024px){#cff-iframe-1{min-height:379px;}}@media (min-width:1024px){#cff-iframe-1{min-height:374px;}}<\/style><script type=\"text\/javascript\">window.addEventListener(\"message\", function(e) {\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tif (\"data\" in e && typeof e.data == \"object\" && ! The Mariners are 80-70 and the Rangers are 78-72.
