Biographical Information[edit]
Steve Bray pitched professionally from 2003 to 2010. Though he spent part or all of five seasons at Triple-A, he never ascended to the majors.
He was drafted twice. He was originally taken by the Milwaukee Brewers in the 45th round of the 2000 amateur draft, a few picks after outfielder Luke Scott, but opted not to sign. He was then taken by the Kansas City Royals in the 14th round of the 2003 amateur draft, one pick ahead of first baseman Matt LaPorta. He was signed by scout Steve Connelly.
After a solid initial campaign (4-2, 3.38 ERA), he went 8-3 with a 3.32 ERA in 34 relief appearances between two teams in 2004, striking out 89 in 78 2/3 innings. Though his ERA rose to 4.68 in 2005, he still managed 83 Ks in 67 1/3 innings. He also reached Triple-A for the first time that year, making a single appearance for the Omaha Royals. Following the season, he was selected by the Milwaukee Brewers in the Triple-A round of the 2005 Rule V Draft. 2006 and 2007 were both excellent seasons, as he went 7-4 with a 2.33 ERA in 50 games between the Huntsville Stars (5-4, 2.70 ERA) and Triple-A Nashville Sounds (2-0, 1.25 ERA) the former year and 5-2 with a 1.62 ERA in 42 games (3 starts) for the Sounds in what was an All-Star campaign in the latter. He also earned a spot in the Arizona Fall League in 2006, going 1-1 with a 4.38 ERA in 13 relief appearances for the Scottsdale Scorpions. After a 2-8 campaign in 2008, he was let go and joined the Seattle Mariners system for 2009. He transitioned to starting, going 7-8 with a 3.11 ERA 26 games (22 starts) for the West Tenn Diamond Jaxx; his 2 shutouts tied Matt Torra for the Southern League lead. He spent one more year in the M's system to wrap up his affiliated career. He led the Southern League in runs allowed that year with 102 and was second in hits allowed (161) behind Jacob Thompson's 163.
He also had success in winter ball, posting a 2.16 ERA in 14 relief appearances for the Gigantes de Carolina of the Puerto Rico Winter League in 2008-09 and going 3-1, 1.97 in 6 starts for the Caribes de Anzoategui of the Venezuelan Winter League in 2010-11.
Overall, he was 50-45 with a 3.71 ERA in 327 games (59 starts) and all levels. In 779 2/3 innings, he allowed 757 hits and 195 walks (1.221 WHIP), while striking out 616 batters. At Triple-A, he was 9-8 with a 3.07 ERA in 94 games (4 starts).
