Biographical Information[edit]

Omar Lopez became manager of the GCL Astros in 2009, the team's first season back in the Gulf Coast League after a 10-year hiatus. He was manager of the VSL Astros in 2008.

Lopez, known as Lopes during his playing days, debuted for the Bristol Sox in 1996 and hit .216/.328/.292 as a 3B-SS. In '97, he batted .276/.369/.353 as Bristol's primary shortstop. He ground into 9 double plays, leading the Appalachian League. During the 1998 campaign, Omar was 5 for 35 with five walks and two doubles for the South Bend Silver Hawks.

Lopez later scouted for the Houston Astros and coached for their Venezuelan program. In 2008, he began his managerial career. In 2020, he moved up to the parent Astros as first base coach.
