Biographical Information[edit]
Pitcher Omar Cruz made his major league debut with the San Diego Padres on April 1, 2025 by pitching a scoreless 9th inning to complete a 7-0 combined shutout over the Cleveland Guardians. Six pitchers appeared for the Padres that day, with the win improving their record to 6-0. Cruz had made the team out of spring training, but had had to wait a week to make his first appearance as the Padres had been dominant thus far, including pitching three shutouts in their first six games.
Cruz was originally signed by San Diego as an international amateur free agent and pitched in their system in 2018 and 2019. After being forced to sit out the 2020 season when the COVID-19 pandemic shut down the minor leagues, he was traded to the Pittsburgh Pirates as part of the three-team trade that landed the Padres Joe Musgrove. He pitched in the Pirates' system from 2021 to 2023, then was taken by the Padres in the minor league portion of the 2023 Rule V Draft. He turned himself into a serious prospect with an excellent 2024 season when he went 6-2, with 2 saves 3.96 in 34 games as a swingman between the AA San Antonio Missions and AAA El Paso Chihuahuas, striking out 118 in 86 1/3 innings. He was added to the Padres' 40-man roster after the season.
