Mario Pelaez played for over a decade in the minor leagues, then became a manager.
Pelaez debuted with the 1958 Hastings Giants, going 1-1 with a 5.83 ERA. He pitched in just three games for the '59 Michigan City White Caps, then had a 12-6, 3.57 record for the 1960 Kokomo Dodgers. In 1961, Mario was with the Decatur Commodores (7-6, 4.23) and Duluth-Superior Dukes (0-2) to conclude his US career.
Returning to his native Mexico, the right-hander was 6-3 with a 5.07 ERA for the 1962 Fresnillo Rojos and 3-3 with a 3.51 ERA for the Mexico City Red Devils. He would remain as a reliever for Mexico City for the rest of the 1960s. He had records of 11-8 3.60 in 1963, 7-7, 4.43 in 1964, 3-5, 4.50 in 1965 and 5-1, 3.27 in 1966. In 1967, he pitched in 55 games, going 7-8 with a 2.21 ERA and only allowed two homers in 102 innings. He tied Juan Suby for the lead in games pitched; had he qualified, he would have beaten Suby for the ERA crown. Mario fell to 1-3, 4.79 in 1968 then ended with a 6-5, 3.25 record in 1969.
Pelaez later managed the Cafeteros de Córdoba and Fresnillo Mineros. In '72, he guided Córdoba (his hometown team) to its second title and first in 33 years; they have not won again as of 2010. Mario pitched one game for the 1973 Cafeteros and tossed a shutout inning to conclude his playing career. Overall, he had gone 43-40 with a 3.55 ERA in 309 Mexican League games (19 starts). He had walked 305 in 573 innings. He had a 69-58 record for his entire minor league career.
