Biographical Information[edit]
Kohei Azuma has pitched in Nippon Pro Baseball.
Azuma was drafted by the Orix Buffaloes in the 2nd round of the development phase in the 2017 NPB draft, and he spent his first four seasons in the NPB Farm Leagues. He had a 4.85 ERA in 4 games in 2022, and he broke out in 2023. Azuma went 6-0 with a 2.06 ERA that season, and he became the first pitcher in the two-league era (in its 74th year) to win his first 7 games without a loss as a starter. In the 2023 Nippon Series, Azuma started in Game 3, and he pitched 5 innings with a run allowed to beat Masashi Itoh of the Hanshin Tigers. He then allowed a run in an inning in Game 7, and the Tigers won the title. Azuma was 3-4 with a 2.61 ERA in 2024, but he suffered from an elbow injury in June and his season ended.
Azuma's repertoire features a fastball that peaks at 96.3 mph, slider, changeup, cutter, curveball and a sinker
