Pitcher Jonathon Crawford was selected by the Florida Marlins in the 42nd round of the 2010 amateur draft but did not sign, opting to attend the University of Florida instead. He was then taken by the Detroit Tigers and scout Jim Rough in the first round of the 2013 amateur draft with the 20th overall pick. He soon signed for a bonus of over $2 million. He made his pro debut with the Connecticut Tigers on June 21st, throwing two scoreless innings against the Vermont Lake Monsters. He went 0-2, 1.89 in 8 starts, but pitched only 19 innings, as he was working on a very strict pitch count after a busy season in college. In 2014, he was allowed to cut loose and made 23 starts for the West Michigan Whitecaps, going 8-3, 2.85. He logged 123 innings, allowing only 93 hits, although he walked 50 and struck out 85, a low number for a top pitching prospect in low Class A.
