The second-round draft selection of the Orix Blue Wave in 1999, Hidetaka Kawagoe had his best season as a rookie, going 11-8 with a 2.85 ERA in the 1999 Pacific League. He was fourth in the league in ERA and tied for his club's lead in wins, but Daisuke Matsuzaka was the clear choice for Rookie of the Year. Slipping to 8-6, 3.79 in 2000, he collapsed in 2001 to a 1-5, 6.07 season. He then became a serviceable, but not great starter, the next few years with campaigns of 3-15, 4.92; 0-3, 4.76; 7-9, 4.17 and 6-8, 3.66. He was the ace of a poor Orix staff in 2004 and led the club in wins and in 2005 was the #2 starter behind Jeremy Powell.
