Biographical Information[edit]
Herb Strayer was a longtime college baseball coach.
Strayer lettered three times in baseball and four times in football at Ohio Northern University. He received a master's of education degree from Bowling Green State University, then taught and coached at Watkins Memorial High School and Eastwood High School. He was an assistant football coach at Hanover College from 1966 to 1969, then returned Ohio Northern in the same capacity. [1] [2]
Strayer became head baseball coach of Ohio Northern in 1971. [3] He led the school to the 1974 Division II College World Series. Ohio Northern won the Ohio Athletic Conference tournament in 1974, 1976, 1982, and 1983. Strayer was still coaching the team when he was diagnosed with the flu in February of 2002, and skipped the team's trip to Florida. He died at home on February 24. [4] Overall, his Ohio Northern teams were 630-424-6, and he was the named conference coach of the year in 1974, 1976, 1980, 1983, and 1995. [5]
