The grandfather of big leaguer Daniel Bard, Fran O'Brien was head baseball coach at Randolph High School from 1959-68 and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology from 1969 to 1996. He was an assistant at Tufts University for two years. He was an assistant coach at the College of the Holy Cross from 1999 to 2001 and head coach from 2002 to 2004. He was also head basketball coach during much of his time at MIT. He later was an assistant at Brandeis University starting in 2007 (and still holding that role as of 2012).

In addition to his grandson Daniel, O'Brien had another grandson, Luke Bard, selected in the supplemental first round of the 2012 amateur draft. His son, Kevin O'Brien, played in the New York Yankees chain in 1980. Another grandson, John Andreoli, has played in the minors.
