Biographical Information[edit]
Infielder Darrin Garner was drafted in the 1st round of the secondary phase of the 1985 amateur draft by the Texas Rangers and played six years in the Ranger system. In his final season (1991), he reached AAA for five games with the Oklahoma City 89ers. Garner was previously drafted by the Kansas City Royals in the June 1984 amateur draft (21st round) and the January 1985 secondary phase (2nd round).
Garner began his coaching career with the GCL Rangers in 1992 and Charlotte Rangers in 1993-1994 in the Texas Rangers system. He moved to the Seattle Mariners organization the next year and coached & managed in their minor league system for 21 years. Garner was a hitting coach for the Port City Roosters in 1995-1996. He managed the AZL Mariners in 1997-1998 and the Lancaster JetHawks in 1999. Garner was a coach for the Everett AquaSox in 2000-2001 and managed the AZL Mariners again in 2002. He then returned to Everett as coach of the AquaSox in 2003-2004. Garner was the Mariners' Minor League Infield & Baserunning Coordinator from 2005-2012. He filled in as a replacement manager for the High Desert Mavericks in 2010 after manager Jim Horner left the team for a coaching position with the Texas Tech University Red Raiders. Garner returned to the field as manager of the AZL Mariners in 2013 and stayed there through 2015.
Garner moved to the Arizona Diamondbacks organization in 2016 as manager of the AZL Diamondbacks. He was a coach for the Kane County Cougars in 2017 before managing the AZL Diamondbacks again in 2018. Garner stayed with the latter team in 2019, but this time as a coach. He was scheduled to manage the Missoula PaddleHeads in 2020 before the minor league season was cancelled due to COVID-19. Garner was a bench coach for the Visalia Rawhide in 2021 and skipper of the ACL Diamondbacks Red in 2022. From 2023-2025 Garner has managed the Rawhide.
So far, Garner has spent over thirty years helping to develop minor league players.
