Darién Núñez has been a pitcher in the Cuban Serie Nacional.
In the 2009 World Youth Championship, he beat Japan with a complete game, 5-2. In the Gold Medal game, the lefty was beating the US, 5-2, after six innings, but Cuba allowed three unearned runs in the 7th and he left with a no-decision; Cuba wound up losing, 7-6. In the 2010 World Junior Championship, he had a 1-1, 1.23 record with 16 whiffs in 14 2/3 IP. He got the win in relief against the Czech Republic, allowed 3 unearned runs in 4 2/3 IP in a no-decision versus South Korea (Cuba lost) and allowed two runs in eight, fanning eight, in a tough 2-1 loss to Australia. A double by Josh Matavesi provided all the damage. Núñez tied for 5th in the event in Ks.
In the 2011-2012, he debuted in the Serie Nacional with Las Tunas. He went 5-5 with two saves and a 3.80 ERA; he allowed only a .228 average but walked 61 and threw 10 wild pitches in 87 2/3 IP. He was 9th in the league in walks and tied for 7th in wild pitches. In the 2012 Haarlem Baseball Week, Darién allowed one run in 4 1/3 IP, getting a no-decision in a Cuban win over Japan and a save in a win over the US.
