Biographical Information[edit]

Bob "Ducky" Jones played nine years in the majors, usually at third base, for the Detroit Tigers during the time of Ty Cobb. Cobb was his manager for six of those years.

Jones was born in Clayton, CA, east of Oakland, in 1889. His minor league career included teams in California, such as San Francisco, Mission, and Los Angeles, and also teams outside of California. He first came to the majors at age 27.

He was not a strong hitter, although he once hit .303 - in 1921, a year when the league hit .292.

A NASSH document from 1993 has an article titled Robert "Ducky" Jones, Detroit Tigers’ Third Baseman (1917-1925) and His relationship with Managers Hughie Jennings and Ty Cobb. It indicates Jones was of Welsh ancestry and lived for a long time in San Diego. After baseball he ran a Shell gas station for 20 years. His grandson Jeff Mason got as high as AAA ball.
