In the late 1990s and early 2000s, the White Sox went through various closers, never settling on any of them for very long. 1999 was Howry's year, when he got 28 saves. However, the White Sox weren't willing to let him keep the job. Roberto Hernández had been the fireman in 1997 for the White Sox, Bill Simas had the job in 1998, Howry in 1999, Keith Foulke in 2000 and 2001, a trio of arms in 2002 and 2003, and then Shingo Takatsu in 2004. It was enough to make a fan dizzy. They finally settled on Bobby Jenks, late in the 2005 season, the year they won the World Series, and he kept the job until the end of 2010. Howry was still pitching in the major leagues by then, with the Cubs, but was never again used as a closer after his stint in the role with the Pale Hose early in his big league career.
