Today\u2019s Immaculate Grid includes the category \u201cPlayed in the Major Negro Leagues.\u201d In 2021, Baseball Reference dramatically expanded coverage of the Negro Leagues as part of our project \u201cThe Negro Leagues are Major Leagues<\/a>.\u201d The major Negro Leagues (currently seven leagues that operated between 1920-1948) are now listed with the National League and American League as major leagues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Those seven major Negro Leagues are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. NAL: Negro American League<\/a> (1937-1948)<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  2. NN2: Negro National League II<\/a> (1933-1948)<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  3. EWL: East-West League<\/a> (1932)<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  4. NSL: Negro Southern League<\/a> (1932)<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  5. NNL: Negro National League I<\/a> (1920-1931)<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  6. ANL: American Negro League<\/a> (1929)<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  7. ECL: Eastern Colored League<\/a> (1923-1928)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    Because the category includes the major<\/strong> Negro Leagues, it is worth mentioning that Henry Aaron<\/a> and Ernie Banks<\/a> will not match for this Grid category. They played in the Negro Leagues in 1952 and 1953, respectively, after the Negro Leagues were no longer considered major.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    First Basemen who played in the Major Negro Leagues<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    Over 500 players in our database appeared in the major Negro Leagues at first base. There are three in Cooperstown as primary first basemen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    1. Buck Leonard<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n
    2. Mule Suttles<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n
    3. Ben Taylor<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

      The great Buck O’Neil<\/a>, finally inducted to the Hall of Fame in 2022 as a Pioneer\/Executive, was also a first baseman in the Negro Leagues. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Third Basemen who played in the Major Negro Leagues<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

      More than 600 players in our database played third base in the major Negro Leagues. Among them are three Hall of Famers:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      1. Ray Dandridge<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n
      2. Judy Johnson<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n
      3. Jud Wilson<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

        John Beckwith<\/a>, one of the top Negro League players outside the Hall of Fame, played quite a bit of third base (as well as shortstop, first base, and catcher). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

        Outfielders who played in the Major Negro Leagues<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

        There were 1200+ players who appeared in the outfield in a major Negro League game in our database. Several were inducted into the Hall of Fame:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        2. Willard Brown<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n
        3. Oscar Charleston<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n
        4. Larry Doby<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n
        5. Pete Hill<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n
        6. Willie Mays<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n
        7. Minnie Mi\u00f1oso<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n
        8. Turkey Stearnes<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n
        9. Crist\u00f3bal Torriente<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

          There are several outfielders from the Negro Leagues outside of Cooperstown with great cases for the Hall, such as Heavy Johnson<\/a>, Wild Bill Wright<\/a>, Vic Harris<\/a>, Alejandro Oms<\/a>, Hurley McNair<\/a>, and Rap Dixon<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
