## Two homer games vs two triple games

27th June 2008

Reader WillyB asked about historical rates of 2-homer games vs 2-triple games, these being performances by individual players in the games, as opposed to total by each team.

Using the batting game finder, I generated the data for the following graph:

First, here is a description of what you are seeing. For each year, I found the total number of times a player had two homers in a game as well as the total number of two triples in a game. Then, I divided by the total number of team games played that particular year. So any given game counts twice--once for each team involved. So this tells you that the incidence of 2-homer games peaked around year 2000 at roughly 7% of games. So on a day when all 30 teams played, on average 2 different guys had 2-homer games. Jeez.

For triples, I went ahead and multiplied the data by 10 just so it would be on a similar scale to HRs, but in your mind you need to divide by 10. Incidence of 2-triple games peaked around 1960 not at 6%, but rather at 0.6% of games. This means that any given team playing a full 152-game season might see, on average, one two-triple game from one of its players per season. By 2000, the rate bottom out around 0.2%, meaning roughly a team would see one of its guys have two triples in a game roughly once every 3 seasons on average.

## Standridge Stands Alone

16th June 2008

Seeing the Yankees' Worm Killer Wang recently lose most of his 2008 season to an injury running the bases in an N.L. park got me wondering...How many A.L. pitchers, since inter-league started, have been "caught stealing" while his team played in an N.L. park? Thanks to Baseball-Reference.com's Play Index Batting Game Finder, it's easy to find the answer. When I set the controls for "From 1997 to 2008, Playing in the AL, Against the NL, Played: P, (requiring CS>=1), sorted by greatest number of games matching selected criteria in a game" this is what I found:

```                   Games Link to Individual Games
+-----------------+-----+-------------------------+
Jason Standridge      1 Ind. Games
Games found: 1.```
Just one pitcher: Jason Standridge - back on June 21, 2003.
I wonder if that's a record that will stand for a long time now?
Note that this is 1 IP, 4 K's. It doesn't include any of the numerous cases where a guy pitched more than one inning and struck out four during one of the innings he pitched. There's no way to search for that with the PI.
## One pitch, one hit
15th June 2008
Lately, we've talked a bit about games where a relief pitcher throws very few pitches and gets one or more outs in a game. Here I am looking specifically at games where a relief pitcher threw just one pitch and gave up a hit.
Let's start out right here, with the list of games where a pitcher threw exactly one pitch and gave up at least one hit, ranked by innings pitched. As you know, pitch data is far from complete, and as a result we get a bunch of bogus entries on this search. Numbers 1 through 5 as well as 7 are all incorrectly listed at 1 pitch, but if you open up the box score you can see that this is not the case. (For this reason, I am not searching for appearances with 0 pitches, as they are tons and tons that incorrectly have 0 pitches listed.)
#6 on that list, though, is extremely interesting. Here's the box score from the game, a match between Oakland and Minnesota from last year that the Twins won, 6-2. Scrolling down to the bottom of the 7th:
```Bottom of the 7th, Twins Batting, Ahead 5-2, Joe Kennedy facing 3-4-5
O      ---  4   93%  J Mauer         Groundout: 2B-1B
--- 3 95% M Cuddyer Triple to CF (Fly Ball to Deep CF-RF)
--3  2   96%  J Morneau       Hit By Pitch
Kiko Calero replaces Joe Kennedy pitching
ROO 1-3 1 96% T Hunter Double Play: Single to LF (Line Drive); Cuddyer Scores; Morneau out at 3B/LF-SS-2B; Hunter out at 2B
1 run, 2 hits, 0 errors, 0 LOB. Athletics 2, Twins 6.```

So Kiko Calero came in with runners on 1st and 3rd with one out. On Calero's first pitch, Torii Hunter singled, scoring the run from third, then the runner from first was throw out tried to stretch to 3rd base. Meanwhile, Hunter himself tried to stretch to 2nd base and was also thrown out. Now, runs score on double plays all the time, but rarely do we see an "ROO" play where the batter gets credit for an RBI, as Hunter did in this case.

Very weird.

The rest of the games on that list are of a much more common variety, such as can be seen in this game from earlier this season. Jesse Carlson relieved Shaun Marcum with runners on first and second. On Carlson's first pitch, Mark Teahan singled but the runner from second was thrown out at home. One pitch, one out, and then Carlson came out of the game. Of course, there are many more appearances where a pitcher throws one pitch in a game and records and out WITHOUT giving up a hit as well. They are just much less interesting.

## Most starts, 2 ER or fewer, first 60 games of the season

5th June 2008

Edinson Volquez turned in another great performance last night, overcoming Brett Myers' no-hit bid into the 7th inning to beat the Phillies.  He once again allowed 2 ER or fewer, which he has done in all 12 starts so far this year.

Here are the pitchers since 1956 with the most starts allowing 2 or fewer ER in his team's first 60 games.

```                   Year Games Link to Individual Games
## Most games with 2+ XHB, first 50 team games
4th June 2008
Dan Uggla and Lance Berkman both had 9 games with two or more extra base hits in their teams' first 50 games of 2008.
Here are the leaders in this since 1956:
Edgar Martinez    1996    12 Ind. Games
## Winning 1-0
2nd June 2008
The other day, the Brewers beat the Braves, 1-0.
This got me wondering as to how many times, these days, in a baseball season, does a team win 1-0?
Thanks to Baseball-Reference.com's Play Index Team Batting Game Finder, it's not hard to find out.  Here are the number of times teams have won 1-0, since 2004:
``` Year Games Link to Individual Games
+----+-----+-------------------------+
2005    40 Ind. Games
2006    39 Ind. Games
2004    35 Ind. Games
2007    34 Ind. Games
2008    14 Ind. Games

Games found: 162.```

As you can see, since 2004, there are only about 35-40 games in a season where someone wins 1-0.  What does that make it - about 2% of the time that someone wins a game 1-0?  Pretty rare these days, huh?

Back in 1968, in that season alone, a team won a game, by a score of 1-0, 82 times.  That was the year of the pitcher...indeed.

## Mets Reach Rare Air In Colorado

27th May 2008

Last Sunday, the Mets did something that's only been done once before in baseball history.  What was it?

Playing in Colorado, holding the Rockies to 3 hits (or less) in the game - and losing the contest.

Thanks to Baseball-Reference.com's Play Index Pitching Game Finder, it's easy to see how many times this rare feat has been done:
