Zachary, it looks like you are correct as Varitek shows up this morning. That's not the way things should work and I'll mentioned it to Sean. Good catch.

I redid the search from 1989 to 2010 and left off any choice of whether the players are active or not. It means that maybe we should add Darin Erstad, who I don't think is officially retired. Same for Ray Durham. Rich Aurilia, though, I think has officially retired. Carlos Delgado should be on there but also hasn't played this year.

Jay: This search doesn't care about how many teams a guy has played for--in only counts if he got 1,000 hits for any one team. Hence guys like Manny showing up twice on the list.

Since neither Varitek nor Berkman are listed, I suspect that active is linked to whether they've played a game this season or not. Let's try searching it tomorrow when Varitek's Saturday game will give him an appearance this year.

The Yankees are really good at promoting these franchise-specific mini-milestones. I'm waiting for The Onion to have an article honoring A-Rod for having fewer Yankee hits than Horace Clark. :-) The Yankees have more history than any other franchise so it seems odd when they reach deep to manufacture more. (Nothing against the blogpost, Andy, you spun it into something interesting).

No the 'active' option just means not officially retired. Being on the DL still counts as active. I don't know why Berkman doesn't come up.

That's just a result of the search parameters. They're the same franchise, so there's no way to distinguish them. It's like how LA Dodgers stats include Brooklyn totals.
