Most PA With 0 AB
Posted by Raphy on November 13, 2009
Just a quick hit from me today:
Oakland Rookie Pitcher Vin Mazzaro set a record this season for most PAs in a season without recording an AB. Over the course of 2 inter-league games Mazzaro came to the plate 4 times, each with a runner on first, and successfully sacrificed the runner over each time. Here are the most PAs without an AB:

Mazzaro and Nationals pitcher Marco Estrada are tied with Jose Parra for the career record:

Mazzaro is also the leader in fewest PA with 4 or more SH. In a single season no one else has done it with less than 8 PA. In a career, no one else with less than 12 PA has done it.

After posting this, I was amazed to see that the seasonal record for position players is 1 PA.

I remember seeing once in a boxscore in the mid-1990s that Ken Griffey, Jr., had 4-5 plate appearances in a game with no official at-bats. I think he had one sacrifice fly, with the rest being walks. But since then, I've seen something like this a few more times.

DoubleDiamond: You're right, Griffey did it in 1996, with 5 PAs.
5 PAs with 0 ABs has been done 40 times since 1954.
