Pitcher Joe Muir retired from baseball in 1953 to join the Maryland State Police. Apparently the state police would not accept new recruits over the age of 30, so Muir had to make the decision at that point.
He pitched for two Pittsburgh Pirates teams that were well below average, with the 1952 Pirates losing 112 games.
He was a big pitching star at Washington High School and was a Marine before playing in the minors.
