Joe Gonzales pitched 8 games for the 1937 Red Sox. He had come out of USC in 1937, where he was a teammate of Johnny Berardino. With the Red Sox, he was three years older than 19-year-old Bobby Doerr.
While at USC, Gonzales had thrown a no-hitter against Stanford University and a one-hitter against UCLA.

Later he went into the Navy.
Gonzales was the long-time varsity baseball coach at Westchester High School in Los Angeles. Several of his players played in the major leagues. The best known is probably Roy Smalley III. Gonzales was also a field judge in the National Football League.
