After retiring, Herman Starrette was a coach for the Rochester Red Wings in 1967 and a minor league pitching instructor for the Baltimore Orioles from 1968 to 1973. He was a coach for the Atlanta Braves (1974-1976), San Francisco Giants (1977-1978), Philadelphia Phillies (1979-1981), Giants again (1983-1984), Milwaukee Brewers (1985-1986), Chicago Cubs (1987), and Baltimore Orioles (1988). He returned to the minors, including a stint as a coach for the 1992 Rockford Expos.
