Massachusetts native Gene Desautels' professional baseball career spanned a time period from 1930 to 1954. He was out of the game from February of 1944 to July of 1945 while serving in the United States Marine Corp during World War II.
Gene spent parts of thirteen seasons in the major leagues from 1930 to 1946. He was with the Detroit Tigers from 1930 to 1933, the Boston Red Sox from 1937 to 1940 and the Cleveland Indians from 1941 to 1945. Gene wound up his major league time with the Philadelphia Athletics in 1946. His stats show he managed a .233 batting average and fielded at a .981 percentage while catching in 712 games during his time in the big leagues.
The husky catcher also spent five seasons as a player in the minor leagues between 1930 and 1936. His best showing came in 1936 with the San Diego Padres of the Pacific Coast League when he appeared in 148 games, hitting at a .319 clip and fielding at a .981 percentage. Desautels finished out his professional baseball career as a minor league manager for seven seasons from 1948 to 1954.
Gene became a coach and scout before going to work for the Mott Foundation. He retired in 1972 as a counselor for Flint Southwestern Academy. Desautels died on November 5, 1994 at the Hurley Medical Center in Flint, MI.
