The son of Kevin Bass, brother of Justin Bass, and nephew of Richard Bass, Garrett Bass made his professional debut in 2007.

Garrett hit .485 in high school, including .525 as a senior, and also played football and basketball. He hit .398/.458/.770 in conference play as a junior in college and tied for second all-time in Jacksonville State history with 6 triples. He tied for the Ohio Valley Conference lead in triples and was a second-team All-Conference pick. Overall, he hit .316 and slugged .581. In 2007, he slipped to .294/~.329/.426. The Washington Nationals selected him in the 42nd round of the 2007 amateur draft.

Assigned to the Vermont Lake Monsters, Bass was batting .279/.296/.500 through his first 32 games as a pro.
