Exicardo Cayones is an outfielder. He was signed by Rene Gayo of the Pittsburgh Pirates for $400,000 in 2008, making him the highest-paid Latin American amateur signing in franchise history at the time. He debuted as a pro with the VSL Pirates and hit .302/.396/.424 in 65 games, with 18 doubles. He was among the Venezuelan Summer League leaders in runs (38, tied for 10th) and doubles (tied for second with Marco Davalillo Jr.). In 2010, he moved to the GCL Pirates, playing 46 games with a batting line of .263/.369/.362. He only made one errror in the outfield. In 2011, he played another 27 games with the GCL Pirates, and 11 with the State College Spikes of the New York-Penn League. His .063 batting average for State College (2 for 32) lowered his batting line to .228/.333/.325.

On February 17, 2012, he was traded to the New York Yankees with P Diego Moreno in return for veteran pitcher A.J. Burnett.
