[edit] Biographical Information

Ed Cogswell, born in England, played three seasons in the major leagues. The first two were well above average.

Cogswell played with Manchester in 1877-79, and came up for 49 games with the 1879 Boston Red Caps (who played 84 games that year). Cogswell's .322 batting average was second-best among the position-players, although his power was only ordinary.

The following year he moved to the 1880 Troy Trojans, in the second year of their existence as a major league team. Even though the team finished only 41-42, it had five future Hall of Famers on it, none of whom was older than 23 at the time. Cogswell himself was 26 at the time.

Ed hit .301, second-best among the regulars (he was beaten out by Roger Connor, who hit .332).

Cogswell came back for 13 games with the 1882 Worcester Ruby Legs, but didn't hit much.
