7
From BR Bullpen
Number 7 was Mickey Mantle's number with the New York Yankees. It is maybe the most recognizable and culturally significant player number. It was retired in 1969, a year after Mantle's retirement.
It was also worn in the first part of Mantle's rookie year by the immortal Cliff Mapes, who himself once allegedly (according to The Sporting News) hit a 500+ ft. home run while playing for the AAA Kansas City Blues. Mapes had the further distinction of being the last Yankee player to wear number 3, which for some unknown reason was only retired by the team a few months before Babe Ruth's death.
