    Ty Cobb -- 2001-08-28

If you are a Ty Cobb fan it is possible to add some sights to a trip to the area by driving a few hours east to Augusta, Georgia where Cobb lived most of his adult life. After a trip to the museum and his hometown you can see his home in Augusta (on William street near Augusta College) , apartment building his owned for years (The Cobb House on Green Street) and the spot where he once played minor league baseball (at 15th street and Calhoun Expressway now part of the Medical College of Georgia complex in the Frog Holler area near the Butt Bridge}. The Georgia Peach ran these streets around the Walton Way Area for many years rasing his special brand of hell.

    Interesting Side Trip -- 2001-05-24

I happened across the Ty Cobb Museum in Royston a couple of years ago while driving through the back roads of Georgia during my time as a student at UGA. I didn't even know I was in Cobb's hometown until I saw a sign promoting a baseball card show at the museum. The museum is part of the Ty Cobb Health Care Center. It's small, but has some interesting stuff, including a lot of personal items donated by his estate.

The main problem is that it really is in the middle of nowhere. Royston is a couple hours east of Atlanta and a little less than an hour north of Athens. This isn't the kind of thing you can really make into a side trip. You either have to really want to go or stumble across it as I did.
