The next best thing -- 2004-05-31

I saw today, a game played at the restoration village between the Mineola Washintons and the Hepstead Eurekas. They played using the 1864 rules (as opposed to the 1887 rules). Hepstead won 8-7. It was fun and relaxing, and interesting seeing them play with some "unusual" rules, and in the old uniforms. The price of admission to the Old Bethpage Village Restoration is only $7, and there is no additional fee for the game. The field is located close to village's entrance.

The game is competative and fund to watch. They play two games every Sunday during the summer, one played using the 1864 rules and the other played with the 1887 rules. If you like baseball and you like baseball history, like myself, I highly recommend it. When the game(s) is (are) over, you could always see the rest of the village, which closes at 5:00 P.M. (E.G., I saw the old school and the lady talking about school in those days - circa 1845 - also pointed out that the public library was located in the school house, consisted of 50 books, and was just a cabinet. So a little kid asked if the library was that small, how big were the librarians. NO FOOLING! So you get a lot for your money!)

Nevertheless, the highlight, to me, was the game. I always say that if i could go back in time to a point before i was born, one thing i would want to do is see a ball game. This was the next best thing.

Watch oldtime base ball! -- 2003-08-20

I have become a "crank" of these "strikers" and "hurlers"; the game is so interesting and different. If you havent seen this remarkable idea, check it out sometime.

Aside from Bethpage, other town ball options include Central Park in NYC on Saturdays (at the ballfields--bring a blanket!); Flemington NJ and Elizabeth NJ among others.

www.neshanock.org is the homepage of the Flemington club. If you visit neshanock.org/status.htm, you will find links to other teams

Baseball like it ust to be -- 2003-06-03

I play 19th century ball at Old Bethpage and love it. It's a great place to bring the whole family. Watch the players in old time uniforms and no gloves. We play 1860s and 1887 style base ball. Plenty of other things to do at this mid 19th century restoration village. Visitors can play in an 1860s game. Come on down and see us.
