    Nats Park -- 2008-07-16

I have been twice already this year, it is a solid new park. I do get the sense though that it is not as nice as some of its contemporary parks. For some reason I just was not overly impressed. Don't get me wrong it is a nice park, much nicer than Shea, my home park until next year, it just is not amazing like Detroit or pittsburgh. I personally like even the Phillies' park significantly more. However, there are some really nice features. The walk ways are huge, which means no squishing through crowds. The regional chili and BBQ places offer a nice selection of specialty foods (though they are all located in one corner of the park). There are some great views of the Washington Monument and the Capital Building if you are sitting in the right spots. The scoarboard is nice, they have a poarch, and a bar in the upper deck with a nice view of the field. The sitelines are generally great, though there are sections of concessions without views of the field. I have taken both the car and the metro to the game. Neither is great. Unless you are willing to pay through the nose, the parking lots are a significant walk away. The metro is cheaper, but it is a bit complicated to understand its fare system which is not the cheapest, and you have to deal with the after game crowds. In the end, it is a nice stadium, but it lacked some character. The perfect example of this was the fact that they have paintings of the all-time greatest players on pillars around the stadium. However, most of the depicted players have absolutely no relation to the franchise. I am sure they could have gathered enough great players from the history of the Senators and Expos if they really tried, but they didn't. Thus, there is a painting of DiMaggio instead of Dawson. Though maybe that is expecting too much of a stadium in DC.

I forgot to add in the last post, the best thing about the stadium: The President Races. Washington, Lincoln, Jefferson, and Teddy Roosevelt race every night and it is great! This is the one thing about the experience that does add character to the stadium, and I for one cannot get enough of it. Just so you know Teddy has never won a race, and the races date back to the Nationals' stay at RFK.
