Diamond and Mountain Views -- 2006-02-21
The New Market Rebels, a college wooden-bat league team, play in a near-perfect stadium with mountains lining the outfield. When the game starts the mountains are there. As night falls, they disappear creating an edge of the world feeling. The college kids are great to watch and Rebel Park seats are nearly on the field. The scent of frying onions wafts over everything as people line up for greasy hamburgers, hot dogs, and popcorn. The level of play is quite good, the spectators are knowledgeable, and the atmosphere is small-town friendly. The sign over the stadium entrance says "Gateway to the Majors." Who knows what future star you may see on a summer night in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia.
