Stadium Review for 2003 -- 2003-09-20
Overall Rating: B
Stadium A+
When we drove up I thought it was a high priced condo development. An usher referred to it, as Churchill Downs and I will settle for that. White and Gray colored buildings ring the seating bowl. The bottom floor of the buildings is used for concessions and the top floor holds the luxury boxes and a walkway connects each of the separate buildings. Group areas are down the wings. Behind the buildings are picturesque pathways that are sheltered by trees. This is one of the prettiest stadiums we have seen on our travels.
The field slightly asymmetrical with a deep center field is a pitcher’s park. A unique touch for this park is the bullpens, which are located down the line in the seating bowl. The view behind it is certainly different. Having a pitcher warm up in front of them while the game is going on might confuse some fans.
North Dallas has been booming and the affluence is reflected here. The stadium store is large with an incredible selection of items. A restaurant for Founder's Club members sits behind home plate with luxury boxes above it. Instead of the typical connected construction the buildings here have been separated connected only by an upper walkway. It makes for one of the most unique looks in baseball.
All seats come with cup holders and have ample room. The lower level seats are wider then those above them. In fact there are three types of box seats in the seating bowl. The higher you go the smaller the chair. Portions of the lower level seats are for Founder Club members and offer wait service. One usher told us that Founder Club members could either watch the game from their seats or up in the restaurant.
Atmosphere B
We took in a Sunday game and experienced the hot Texas summer. Not a Problem since we grew up with heat and humidity from the DC area. It was a good crowd but most just sat on their hands. The on field guy was good and I liked the white hat.
The big ticket here is the video board. The picture quality is very good and they use it to take play pictures of the crowd and highlights from the game. In this regards it is more like a Major League game.
Value C
The ticket prices run from $9 to $18 making this one of the most expensive tickets in the minors. The team uses Ticketmaster, which adds to the cost if you call for tickets. If the stadium is sold out the team will sell grass berm tickets for $5. The grass berm is just behind the outfield fence and any fan can sit out there after purchasing a ticket.
Food prices are expensive and they closed one stand early (in the sixth). Most of the parking spaces have been pre sold but the parking garage located behind left field is open and the charge is $3.
Odds and Ends
A large mall is right next-door and free parking is offered there along with a shuttle bus ride to the ballpark. There are a lot of restaurants/shopping in the area so you could come here and spend the day shopping before the game. I hope they can retain their fan base. I think the prices are far out of line. Better to keep ticket prices down and encourage families to come out and enjoy the fun. Build your fan base one fan at a time. Give them good value at a good price. It looks like management is more concerned with their business clientele and groups and not families.
The staff here is very friendly and helpful. For a new operation there is a high level of professionalism or maybe just good old Texas charm. Since we took in games in Ft Worth and Frisco on the same trip I appreciate why the stadium in Ft. Worth had an open backing. It allows air to flow through the seating area, which, can help on those hot summer nights. The buildings since they are separated offer some air movement too.
When we arrived early (around noon for a 6 PM start) to pick up our tickets and scout out the ballpark. A fireman's charity game was set to start at one. One staff member told us we could walk around and take pictures and since we had tickets to game at six we could watch the charity event. After we left her a second staff member hurried over and told us to leave, what is going on here? I wonder if some people here think they are running an exclusive club and not a minor league team.
Special thanks to Blake Reedy for his timely emails concerning parking and other questions.
