    overall... -- 2005-12-31

Southpaw is the mascot's name, his "uniform" number is K9. He goes through the stands visiting with the fans and making sure everyone is having a great time, in addition to his "on-field" duties. Yes, the screen is a bit tough from left field, but they had to build the stadium around that landmark chuch (I think it adds to the ambiance). The parking is extremely reasonable, try finding parking for under $25.00 for a Jaguars game a quarter of a mile away then suddenly five bucks for across the street looks great. Main reason you don't see broken bats in the stadium shop? Kids after the game can go down to the dugout and ask politely for them and a player or the team manager will gladly turn them over. If there's a player nearby he'll even ink it (adults, good luck, the Suns cater more to the kids on the "broken bats" thing as it should be). The program doesn't have the roster and stat sheet included because of the high volume of player movement in the minors, they instead now include a up-to-date daily lineup sheet with names, numbers and stats. The Suns do some promotions (Friday Fireworks, different fundraisers, etc...) but they always remind you that the boys on the field are the main reason we're all there... the way it SHOULD be.

    Stadium Review for 2004 -- 2005-05-25

    Overall Rating: A-

    Stadium: A-

Outside the stadium the red brick and green colored roof has a classy look that is hard to beat. It is a large modern stadium with stylish lines, they did it right. Many of the seats are angled towards home plate offering the fans a great view. Nearly all the seats are box seats offering good leg room and cup holders. The small brick wall behind home plate is a nice touch.

The design and overhang eliminate much of the sunlight. It is easy for those who do not want to be in the sunlight to be undercover. PLUS the overhang gives it a nice old fashioned look I really like. The bullpens are just down the line. Pitchers sit next to the stand like at Wrigley. Bleacher seats are behind right field. A large kids area runs down the left field line. Bathrooms are available out past left center.

Sections have fifteen or fewer seats, nearly ideal.

The foul lines are pretty short 321 and 317 but don¡¦t be fooled. Center field is 420 feet and the power alleys 382 and 375 making for a lot of green and a pitchers park.

The seating bowl has a small concourse that runs just pass home plate between the sections. The larger concourse is above the seating bowl. The gift store (behind home plate) and concession stands/bathrooms are here.

There are two main entrances, one behind home plate and the other down the third base line. You need to walk up to the main concourse. Ramps and elevators are available for those who might need them.

A small brick church down the third base line turns the seating bowl into a reverse L. One problem we noted is that the scoreboard is hard to read for those sitting on the third base line. It is angled towards the seats on the first base line.

    Atmosphere: B+

The staff is hard working and very friendly. On a kids day one usher asked us if we would rather watch the game from the upstairs party desk away from the 4,000+ school kids. Thanks Nateļ

We enjoyed the PA Announcer, good job.

Great kids area, a lot of activities for the young ones. Families can stretch out on eh grass and take in the sights.

The mascot Southpaw or was it K9, he doesn¡¦t do much other then fire a water gun. Hire Brad from Delmarva, quick!

    Promotions

Toilet Seat Horseshoe toss. My Cousin Mike¡¦s wife wants to know where the seats came from. I told her the bathroom behind first base and we all laugh. Sandwich race on telescreen. Kids participate but look bored. Sumo. Get rid of the mat and have the contestants charge each other. Peter Piper Pickle contest gets the kids into a pickle. Stadium girls dance the YMCA Audio clips are fun Kid of the game gets t-shirt and autograph Crystal Springs water gun shoot out Mascot Race Lucky numbers in program

The program at $4 s one of the best we have seen. One staffer told us that they used to offer a roster and stat sheet, please bring it back.

    Tickets

We thought the ticket prices were slightly high. Most of the seats are box seats but there are some bleacher seats out past right field. We parked across the street for $5 but there are other lots nearby which are available. They even used golf charts to shuttle fans back and forth, another fan friendly service.

    Dugout box $15.00 Box $10.50 Reserved $7.50 Bleacher/Berm $5.50

    Odds and Ends

The souvenir store is nice and they have a lot of items and prices seemed reasonable. One person told us that they would normally have game used items (they had a game used batting helmet but didn¡¦t put the broken bats out for kids day). I suggested they have the players sign several of the items. The Wilmington Blue Rocks have one of the best souvenir stores we have ever visited. They are inventive and find neat things to market.

Walking through the gift store after the game on Kids Day we were offered free cotton candy. They did this at Frederick some time back offering hot dogs that were left over to the fans for free. They used to cut prices after the 7th inning. No longer.

These guys can organization a kids day. The kids march in and receive their drinks and a soda. They have staff members available to direct the kids to the seats. Great organization.

The view from the seating bowl is of Alltel Stadium and the bridges over the St. John¡¦s River.

Jacksonville is the attendance leader in the Southern League. An active mascot and some additional on field promotions would only add to the enjoyment

Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville -- 2003-09-03

Great site. The information is outdated, however. The Suns moved into the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville in 2003. www.jaxsuns.com

The only bad thing you will find at Wolfson Park is the hot weather. It's a great place to go to watch a game!

Great value for minor league baseball -- 2000-10-14

Wolfson Park in Jacksonville is getting up in age and will be replaced probably by the 2002 season. But it is still a pretty good place to watch a game, it is centrally located next to Alltel Stadium with ample parking on most occasions. The father-son combination of Peter Bragan, Sr. (brother of former big-leaguer Bobby Bragan) and Peter Bragan, Jr. have done a good job of keeping the ticket prices down and have also made sure that concession prices are very reasonable. The handicapped access is weak, due to the age of the stadium, that should improve with the new ballpark. There is also a vary limited no smoking area. Most seats are covered by the roof, unfortunately, there are many posts between the upper and lower sections that can block a view in certain areas. But overall, it is still a viable stadium, there aren't a lot of frills, just basic baseball in a good setting.
